The idea here is to catch yourself saying negative things about yourself or your situation and then add “yet, but” at the end to reframe and neutralize it.
Here’s an example.
“I’m never able to do ___ well when I compete, it's like my body just forgets what I have trained?”
Reframed self-talk with YET, BUT
“I’m not able to do ___ well when I compete YET, BUT even though it feels like my body forgets what I have trained I am not going to give up.”
This may seem very simple, but over time you will rewire your brain to think in this manner.
